WXStar - Starlink Service Plans
Bottom line: WXStar works with the cheapest Starlink plan available — the Standby plan at around 10 EUR/month.
⚠ Two separate subscriptions required: In addition to your Starlink plan, you also need a WXStar Data Service subscription at 290 EUR + VAT per year (paid to us). ADL customers with an active service plan get the WXStar data service included at no extra charge — the hardware must still be purchased separately.
WXStar uses very little data - weather products are compact by nature, and a 500 kbps connection is more than sufficient to receive everything in real time. This means you almost certainly do not need one of the expensive aviation plans.
Starlink's Standby mode (also known as Basic Connectivity) is the recommended plan for WXStar. Travel and Roam plans also work well. The full aviation plans are only worth considering if you also need in-cabin internet for passengers.
WXStar includes built-in Starlink connection management that keeps your weather data
flowing automatically - no user interaction required.
As a result, any Starlink plan that is not locked to a fixed location works
with WXStar, including Basic Connectivity (Standby) at just ~10 EUR/month and
Travel/Roam plans.
The only exception is ocean coverage: if you fly beyond 12 nautical miles offshore and
need weather data there, you will need a plan with ocean coverage (Aviation 450 MPH or
a Jet plan).
If you use a Standby or Travel plan and want to feed an EFB app (ForeFlight, SkyDemon, Garmin Pilot), see EFB Apps via WiFi for how the WXStar iOS app ensures an uninterrupted GDL90 stream.
