WXStar - RS232 Wired Connection
The WXStar 4-pin connector provides an RS232 serial output for a direct wired connection to avionics. This is primarily used with Avidyne IFD and EX5000 displays. The wired path runs completely in parallel with the FIS-B and WiFi outputs.
| Device | What works | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Avidyne IFD440 / IFD540 | Weather + ADS-B traffic | Also supports WiFi GDL90 - see EFB via WiFi |
| Avidyne EX5000 | Weather (radar) only | Requires software 8.2.2 or later. No traffic: ADS-B transponders connect via ARINC429 only, not RS232. |
For full wiring details, connector pinout, and installation photos see Avidyne Interconnect »
The Avidyne IFD440 and IFD540 also support GDL90 over WiFi. If a wired installation is impractical or you prefer to avoid the avionics work, see EFB Apps via WiFi for the WiFi alternative.
